 BHARTRHARI

Question.(1) What do you know about Bhartrhari ?

Answer. Bhartrhari was the king of ujjayini (now Ujjain) in the Malwa region of Central India. He a great scholar, Sanskrit poet gram marian and philosopher. He belonged to parmar dynasty and lived in the latter half of the fifth century. He was the exponent of moral principles. He was the shining star of Indian culture. He was generous and kind to his subjects.

Question.(2) Why did king Bhartri renounce his kingdom ?

Answer. Legend has it that king Bhartri renounced his kingdom and the world and retired to the forest when he discovered his queen pingala's infidelity in married life. He became a sadhu after the renunciation.

Question.(3) What according to Bharthari is the function of poetry ?

Answer. The function of poetry is to pierce our heart and through this to sway our senses. The poet compares poetry to a bowmen's arrow which also has the same function. Real success of a poem or an arrow lies in moving our senses by sticking in the heart.
