Ba 3rd year paper 1st DOVER BEACH BY MATTHEW ARNOLD
Question.(1) What is the main theme of Arnold's poem ‘Dover Beach’ ?
Answer. ‘Dover Beach’ is a poem which echoes Arnold's typical note of sadness and the sense of tears in mortal things. In it Arnold expresses his loneliness, sense of religious loss and feelings of spiritual isolation.
Question. (2) What is Arnold's conviction towards the end of the poem ‘Dover Beach’ ?
Answer. Arnold's conviction is that in this world without faith there is nothing to endear or console life. The world appears to be a land of dreams but it has nothing it—no joy, no love, no peace, no relief. Therefore, the only consolation for man is, "O love, let us be true to one another in a world which is so deceptive".
