Question.(1) To which age did Browning belong?
Answer. Browning belongs to Victorian age. He divides with Tennyson the primacy of poetry in the Victorian era but the two poets are curiously dissimilar. Whereas in Tennyson the artistic form is paramount, of much of Browning's work, thought is more important.

Answer: A part from obscurity, another quality of Browning's poetry is his robust optimism which rests on his concept of love, his faith in religion and a realistic appraisal of success and failure.
Question.(3) What kind of poem is "My Last Duchess" ?
Answer. "My last Duchess" is a dramatic monologue. The speaker is an Italian Duke of the Renaissance period. He is speaking to the Count's messenger who has come with a marriage proposal. We feel that the listener is present, thought he does note utter a single word.
Question.(4) What is the origin of the poem "My Last Duchess" ?
Answer. This poem owes it's conception to Browning's travels in northern Italy. It is based on the life of Duke Vespasiano Gonzalo who belonged to an ancient family of the district near Mantua.His first wife Diana was lovely but her husband suspected her fidelity and she disappeared mysteriously, probably by violence. The second wife was put to death- "I gave commands;
Then all smiles stopped together" That is, the commands were that she should be killed.
