Question.(1) What is the poet's prayer for her beauty ?
Answer. The poet prays for his daughter's beauty. God may grant her beauty but not the beauty of Helen of Troy who attracted every one and made people mad after her. She should not be so beautiful that she may fall in love with herself and become proud.
Question.(2) What virtue does the poet wish his daughter to cultivate ?
Answer. Years wishes his daughter to cultivate courtesy, as her principal virtue. Now courtesy is not a gift but an acquisition. It is a product of sincere labour on the part of women who are not exceptionally beautiful. He reflects on the wisdom and contentment which his own marriage has brought to him.
Question.(3) Why does Yeats want his daughter to be free from hatred ?
Answer. Yeats wants his daughter to be free from all feelings of hatred. She should develop qualities of character and manners. If there is no hatred in our mind, threats and buffets of the wind of misfortune can never disturb the composure of the soul. If there is no hatred in the linnet's mind, the howling and the shrieking winds cannot separate it from the tree. The idea is that harmony can prevail if there is no hatred.
Question.(4) What, according to Yeats, is the worst kind of hatred ?
Answer. The poet says that the worst kind of hatred is intellectual hatred. He wishes that his daughter should escape the short of intellectual hatred. He has seen the fate of the most beautiful and rich woman who lost her happiness because of intellectual hatred. He refers to Maud Gone whom intellectual hatred turned into an out of date propagandist and once her lovely voice was changed into "an old bellows full of angry winds". She gained nothing because of her intellectual hatred.
