 Question.(1) To which age does Hopkins belong ?

Answer. By birth Hopkins was a Victorian poet. He was born in 1844, that is, in the mid-nineteenth century and his childhood was shaped by events of the Victorian society. However, his poetry belongs to modernism in subject-matter, use of language and experimentation in rhythm and syntax. Hopkins was much ahead of his times.


Question.(2) How does Hopkins contrast the sea and the skylark with man ?

Answer. First of all Hopkins describes the natural sounds if the sea and the singing of the skylark. These fill him with joy. But in the sestet his mood changes to one of gloom and despondency. He is deeply pessimistic and foresees the total decline and even dissolution the human race.

 BHARTRHARI Question.(1) What do you know about Bhartrhari ? Answer. Bhartrhari was the king of ujjayini (now Ujjain) in the Malwa region of Central India. He a great scholar, Sanskrit poet gram marian and philosopher. He belonged to parmar dynasty and lived in the latter half of the fifth century. He was the exponent of moral principles.
